Nappy Liners All You Need To Know

Nappy liners are a layer that sit inside the nappy and directly against the baby’s skin. They are not a necessary Modern Cloth Nappy (MCN) accessory however many prefer to use them. Depending on the liner at use they can offer a protection layer against the nappy making cleaning a breeze and preventing staining. Some liners also offer an additional wicking layer drawing moisture away from babies’ skin which reduces the chance of rashes.

Enviromentally Friendly Microfleece Nappy Liners

Tiny Tooshes sell reusable microfleece liners. These are cut to contour the body adding extra width around the wet and dirty areas of the nappy to catch maximum excrement. They are also narrower around the crotch to ensure they do not disturb the secure elastic seal around the skin.

Microfleece acts as a stay dry layer and wicks moisture quickly away from the baby’s skin which results in a nice dry baby with minimal to no rashes. The suede cloth nappy inner layer also provides a great grip surface for the microfleece liner to ensure it doesn’t move whilst dressing an active and wiggly baby.Microfleece liners also protect the nappy from barrier cream build up (which affects the nappies absorbency).

When cleaning microfleece liners, they are simply taken out of the nappy and any excrement on them can be easily flicked or scraped into a toilet. The liners can be placed into same wash as the nappy pockets and inserts and they dry very quickly ready for re use.

Other Alterintive Nappy Liner Options

An alternative option to microfleece liners are disposable bamboo liners. These liners are compostable and biodegradable and can be gently washed, dried and reused after a wet nappy if desired. Their main use is to catch poo and help with its easy disposal, however not suitable for new born babies or babies whose liquid poo will simply seep through.

Tiny Tooshes do not sell bamboo liners because we feel the benefits of the microfleece liners outweigh those of a bamboo liner. Some cons of bamboo liners we have faced include

  1. Bamboo liners are not contoured to fit the shape of a nappy and therefore can be hard to place in a nappy without disturbing seals
  2. Bamboo liners can often move from their placement in the nappy especially during the change of a wiggly baby
  3. Bamboo liners are disposable and compostable; however, they can still take 10-16 days to break down within a sewage system. Australia currently has no state or national standard regulating this so its true impact is not known. However, it is thought nappy liners make up only a small portion of ‘flushable waste’ within Australia, which in our opinion is still a little too much when it can be avoided
  4. Bamboo liners are not recommended to be flushed within a septic system.

Tiny Tooshes microfleece nappy liners come in one size and patterns are subject to availability however boy, girl or neutral designs can be requested at time of purchase.
